MARVIN Architect's Challenge Best Remodel/Addition Winner 2015
Harbrook worked with Northern Design to provide quality, efficiency, comfort, and lasting beauty with Marvin Windows in this remodeled Adirondack retreat. "Really appreciated the confident whimsy this displayed. Rather than playing games with scale and massing to try to continue the scale of the original house, the addition monumentally asserts itself, creating an interesting contrast and counterpoint to the small original cottage. It seems 'funky' in the best sense of that word. It takes courage to use those colors!," said one Jury member.
Collaborating with a homeowner who has professional experience as a historian and an education in architecture, this remodeled cabin developed as a truly unique expression of Adirondack design. Taking care to avoid certain clichés and ornamentation, the addition paid close attention to detail, honored the spirit of the old cabin, and provided a more expansive interior. The surprising tower form was inspired by old fire towers perched on Adirondack mountain tops. Clad windows from Marvin proved compatible with the vibrant color scheme of the original wood windows and trim and afforded stunning lake views.
